More Details:

The Boy Scouts operate four High Adventure Bases:  Philmont in New Mexico (Backpacking), Norther Tier in norther Minnesota (canoeing in Boundary Waters), The Summit in West Virginia (assorted outdoor activities), and Sea Base in the Florida Keys (Sailing and Diving).

Philmont is the oldest and perhaps the most storied of the four.  Reservations are made via lottery nearly two years prior.  While backpacking through the mountains is the primary activity, experiencing the western mountains, and the many activities available while hiking, makes the trip unforgettable.

On most days of the trip, there are activities built into the schedule before, during, or after hiking. May backcountry camps are themed. For instance at a cowboy camp – the staff lives all summer in cowboy/cowgirl garb and teaches horseback riding and branding, hosts chuck wagon dinners, and provides a campfire experience with live music.  Other themed camps include:  rock climbing, fly fishing, logging, mining, mountain man/fur traders, team building, wagon trail pioneers, and may others.

Check out the Philmont website for videos and social media for pictures of what happens throughout the summer.

This trip is one of a kind. The troop has been often in the past. In 2018 a group was ready to depart when a wildfire broke out on the ranch and wound up cancelling the trip – and eventually the entire summer’s program.  Philmont is recovering and scouts are back this summer hiking.  (Don’t worry, the 2018 trip quickly regrouped and found a great alternative in northern Colorado.)

The troop has reservations for two crews in 2020.  Each crew is 9 scouts plus 3 adults.  We may fill one or both reservations.  We want to have a list of scouts who are interested by September 1st.  An information meeting will be help for parents and scouts in August.

Please email Michael Ghioto with questions – or to add your name to the list.  Please see the attached information sheet for other details.
